The CSP is committed to leading the movement for rehabilitation, championing physiotherapy and influencing for positive system change to ensure that everyone’s Right To Rehab is realised.
Across the UK, the CSP has achieved much, both individually, but also by working closely with partners from the Community Rehabilitation Alliance, which the CSP convenes and co-chairs.
In England, achievements include:
- Effective influence on the recently-published Intermediate Care Framework and new model for community rehabilitation. Both of these documents reflect the work of the CSP, and indeed cite it, when referring to data collection (see also ‘Making Community Data Count’ report).
- The publication of the rehabilitation best practice standards, which, for the first time, set out what good rehab looks like, taking into account multiple conditions and multiple professions.
- The publication of the ‘Making Community Rehab Data Count’ report, which sets out the importance of ensuring robust data is collected to ensure the delivery of rehab is as effective as possible.
- Securing the role of ‘Director of Rehab’ within the NHSE at a national level. This role is filled by Jenny Keane, and the CSP has continued to develop strong links with the service, at a national level.
- Developing an integrated model for delivering rehab in the community, many aspects of which have been adopted by the NHSE’s Community Rehab Model published last week.
- Securing an acknowledgement from the UK Government that rehab is as important as medicines and surgery.
- Securing the commitment, within the Health and Social Care Act debates, from Health Minister, Lord Kamal that “every ICB will be required to provide and improve rehabilitation services as part of its duty to provide a comprehensive health service.”
In Scotland:
- A 'Once for Scotland' approach to rehabilitation has been unveiled, with work now underway to see it implemented.
- Rehab leads have been appointed in every Scottish health board, progressing the ‘Once for Scotland’ rehab strategy.
- The Right to Rehab Coalition has reworked the Community Rehabilitation Best Practice Standards to reflect the rehab environment in Scotland. Publication of these is ancicipated soon.
- The Right to Rehab Coalition has launched a campaign and petition to have rehab as a human right in Scottish legislation.
In Wales:
- There have been numerous rehab policy announcements, demonstrating that campaigning by the CSP is proving effective.
- £30 million investment was announced to improve people’s chances of living at home independently.
- The All-Wales community rehabilitation best practice standards were launched, and reflect closely the CRA's best practice standards.
- The CSP has developed close ties with the health minister in Wales, resulting in her attendance at a CSP Right To Rehab event in Cardiff Bay in summer 2023.
- There is acknowledgement from the health minister that rehabilitation and the physiotherapists have a key role to play in the future sustainability of the NHS.
- The CSP Wales team has attended Plaid Cymru, Labour, and Conservative party conferences to represent physios, the profession and push the right to rehab investment message.
Following the 2022 Northern Ireland Assembly election, the CSP, working in partnership with others, has been engaging with key political stakeholders to drive the rehab and recovery agenda forward.
Prior to the elections, the alliance in Northern Ireland worked hard to influence party manifestos, securing support from key candidates.
