Vacancy details

NHS England and NHS Improvement came together on 1 April 2019 as a new single organisation. The NHS Long Term Plan focuses on delivering integrated care to patients at the local level and we can best support the NHS to deliver this as a single integrated organisation.

At the NHS, we are reminded every day of how important life is. As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement whether that’s job share, part time or another flexible pattern. In addition,  although the role advertised may have an ‘home’ office base indicated, we remain committed to supporting flexibility around workplace locations. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.

Our new operating model represents a strong shift to regional delivery supported by expert corporate teams. Local health systems are supported by our integrated regional teams who play a major leadership role in the geographies they manage.

We are jointly committed to creating and maintaining a fair and supportive working environment and culture, where contributions are fully recognised and valued by all and staff feel empowered to carry out their duties to the best of their abilities. As employers we are committed to promoting and protecting the physical and mental health and well-being of all our staff. This underpins our values as set out in the NHS Constitution, supports us to be an Employer of Choice and ultimately enables our employees to support the effective care of our patients.

We are recruiting two Net Zero Advisors to join NHS England and NHS Improvement’s, Greener NHS programme, which sits within the Primary Care, Community Services and Strategy Directorate. These are policy and strategy roles, with a specific focus on operations and delivery.

This is an incredibly exciting time to join the Greener NHS programme following our commitment to become the world’s first carbon net zero national health system by 2040 and the appointment of the NHS first Chief Sustainability Officer.   The publication of the Delivering a 'Net Zero' National Health Service report reflects the growing evidence of the health impacts of climate change and air pollution and recognises the vital role the NHS can play in not only treating the health impacts caused by climate change, but also in addressing the sources of climate change and air pollution.  This work builds upon the NHS existing sustainability commitments in the NHS Long Term Plan.

These roles are part of a dynamic team supporting the NHS to solve some of its toughest challenges in securing a sustainable greener future. We are uniquely placed to look across the health and care system, to better understand and reduce the environmental impacts of health and care and save thousands of lives and hospitalisations across the country.

The Greener NHS team works closely with both corporate and regional teams across NHS England and NHS Improvement, with local health systems, Trusts and other stakeholders. The post holders will lead and support the delivery of Greener NHS portfolio, working with teams across organisations to reduce the environmental impact of the NHS.

As Net Zero Advisors we are seeking highly motivated professionals who can work across organisations to deliver key pieces of work. The roles will be specialised, with each focused on developing and implementing evidenced-based policies across the following portfolios:

Role 1: NHS Estates & Facilities, Travel & Transport and Climate Change Adaptation. Examples of work may include working with the NHS Estate and Facilities team to optimise energy usage in secondary care facilities or collaborating with ICS/STPs to improve local air pollution. Technical experience or knowledge of estates and facilities, travel and transport or adaptation is desirable but not essential. This role is responsible to a Senior Net Zero Delivery Lead of the Greener NHS programme.

Role 2: Low-carbon models of care. Example of work may include collaborating with national clinical programmes to design low carbon models of care in an acute setting. We would strongly encourage those with frontline clinical experience to consider applying. This role is responsible to the Senior Clinical Lead of the Greener NHS programme.

The post holders will be efficient and effective professionals who work to a high-quality and have good understanding of current health and climate policy and sustainability and climate change issues. They will have existing strategy, project management and policy skills with previous experience of working within health being desirable. They will have the ability to problem-solve and project manage complex programmes whilst supporting colleagues and managing relationships with a wide range of senior colleagues. Some travel throughout England may be required.

Candidates are asked to stipulate the role(s) for which they wish to be considered within the application.
