Following a successful pilot scheme equality reps will now become a permanent part of the union support that the CSP provides to members.
CSP equality reps have been working to improve the experience for members in their workplace and challenge discrimination at work.
This has all been part of a pilot launched back in 2021, born out of a need to better represent members in the workplace facing discrimination.
65 equality reps were accredited in the pilot, and they’ve been working alongside other CSP reps as part of existing workplace teams helping to further the agenda for equity, diversity and belonging in the workplace.
The evaluation of the pilot showed that the role has been a great success and the CSP will now be formally recognising the Equality reps as a union role that members can take up in their workplace. The role has had a positive impact on members facing discrimination feeling more supported and has enabled workplace reps to feel confident in supporting members where discrimination has occurred as they have a colleague to help organise with them on equality issues.
Sian Caulfield, national officer at the CSP said:
We are delighted that equality reps will now have a permanent home in the CSP trade union representative structures - this is a huge achievement for the CSP, its members and the continuing commitment to equity, diversity and belonging across the profession.
For now, our existing equality reps will continue in their roles and will continue to be supported by their regional teams. Further recruitment of Equality reps will begin next year.
