With seven posts up for election, consider putting yourself forward for the CSP Council, says Kirsty Semple
We are at the start of the election process for CSP Council again this year. With the CSP committed to equity, diversity and belonging in all its work, and with research showing that better decisions are made when there are different perspectives brought to the table, we are keen to encourage a diversity of candidates to stand to ensure a council that is representative of our membership and society.
If you are thinking about standing for election, remember that knowledge is not everything – it can be learnt, and we provide training and support for all new council members. In fact, joining council is a real opportunity to develop new skills. In deciding whether the role may be for you, consider that joining council could:
- Provide a constantly stimulating environment to continually learn and to grow your knowledge of the issues facing physiotherapy and members.
- Give an opportunity to ask powerful questions and express your opinion, while being supporting of others doing the same through listening skills and being open to other views.
- Council sets the overall strategy for CSP, rather than taking the operational decisions, so it can provide an opportunity to develop skills and experience in strategic decision-making.
The estimated time commitment averages around 12 to 18 hours per month, but only some of this is for meetings during working hours. Council members generally fit many of their duties around other responsibilities, for example by picking up tasks in the evening.
We are keen to encourage a diversity of candidates to stand to ensure a council that is representative of our membership and society.
