Invest in rehab leadership as part of healthcare review, says CSP

The CSP has called for improvements in community rehab to be a key part of the upcoming Health and Social Care Leadership Review.

A review will look at regional disparities in efficiency and health outcomes

The review aims to understand regional disparities in efficiency and health outcomes, improve processes and foster effective leadership in order to meet healthcare challenges.

Led by former Vice Chief of the Defence Staff General Sir Gordon Messenger, the review of NHS England and social care is expected to report back to the Health Secretary in early 2022.

A government spokesperson said, ‘Strengthening leadership, including clinical leadership, and spreading the best examples of outstanding management is vital in ensuring that every pound of investment is spent well, by driving up innovation and more efficient ways of working.’

The CSP said it would be monitoring developments closely to ensure they would bring about improvements that could be sustained in the long-term.

CSP assistant director Sara Hazzard says,

It is essential that the new Integrated Care Systems in England have rehabilitation leaders in place to drive improvements in community rehab.

‘But we will be monitoring developments closely to ensure efficiency is not the only focus of this review. Now more than ever the system must have what it needs to deliver on the existing commitments of the long term plan.

‘The current levels of unmet health and social care need are even greater than what existed before the pandemic.

‘To deliver sustainable solutions, innovation must address the barriers to accessing health and social care and the inequity that has devastating consequences.’
