The CSP has urged incoming NHS England head Amanda Pritchard to make workforce a priority.
Amanda Pritchard, the chief operating officer of NHS England, and chief executive and chief operating officer of NHS Improvement, was confirmed as NHS chief executive today and will replace Lord Stevens after he steps down later this week.
The former head of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust in London will become the first female chief executive of the NHS in its 73-year history.
An Oxford graduate, Pritchard has worked for the NHS for her entire career after joining the NHS Management Training Scheme in 1997.
CSP chief executive Karen Middleton said: ‘We congratulate Amanda on her appointment and welcome her into the role at this critical moment for the NHS in England.
Chief among her priorities should be a focus on workforce as the NHS faces up to the monumental task of tackling Covid and managing the huge demand on other services that has built up during the pandemic.
‘But central to the success of meeting those challenges will be to continue the drive towards providing more care outside of hospitals and built around the needs of patients, especially those with long-term conditions.
‘The CSP and our members stand ready to support that work and we look forward to continuing our close working relationship with NHS England.’
