The University of Portsmouth is a dynamic and ambitious institution with a track record of success. One of only four universities in the south east of England to achieve a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework and ranked in the top 150 in the Times Higher Young University World Rankings.

To support the development and delivery of a new pre-registration MSc Physiotherapy, the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Science is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and committed individual to a Senior Lectureship position in Physiotherapy. The School is within the Faculty of Science and Health and holds strong teaching, research and innovation links with many areas of the Faculty. The School performed well in the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) and is hopeful of continued success in the forthcoming REF2021, ranks amongst the leading Sport and Exercise Science providers in the UK, and has consistently boasted excellent student satisfaction. At an institutional level, Portsmouth was rated Gold in the UK Government’s Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and ranked in the top 20 UK universities for overall student satisfaction in the National Student Survey (NSS). The Economist also rates the University of Portsmouth as number one in the UK for boosting graduate salaries, with 97.5 per cent of graduates working, or in further study six months after they graduated.

As a Senior Lecturer, the successful candidate will make a significant contribution to teaching and research activities, and support our existing, and emerging, multidisciplinary school-wide themes: Extreme Environments; Individual, Occupational and Organisational Performance; and, Physical Activity, Health, and Rehabilitation. In addition to holding a PhD (or equivalent experience) candidates will be a registered Practitioner Physiotherapist with the Health and Care Professions Council, and Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who can evidence an ability to support placement activities for Physiotherapy students, deliver and develop our curriculum pathways that align to the School and University strategy, lead and publish high quality research, and engage in income generation activities that align to the School thematic strengths. Experience of supervising students (e.g., MSc, MRes, MPhil, PhD, ProfDoc) would also be beneficial. Current research projects of relevance within the school include biomechanical measures of rehabilitation following orthopaedic surgery, exercise testing and clinical physiology relating to chronic diseases, and socio-ecological approaches to health promotion, wellness and the prevention of chronic diseases. The practical skills and techniques that you bring should complement our existing strengths through your own specialist knowledge and previous teaching experience is essential along with a strong team-focused ethos.

Information on the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Science

Recent investments have supported our student learning experiences (resulting in outstanding graduate-level first destination career statistics), our research environment, and planned physical and estate developments to extend beyond the current accommodation within the Spinnaker Building; this has already resulted in the acquisition of new estate space for the provision of Strength, Conditioning and Rehabilitation related activities. The school features excellent human analysis facilities including motion capture, force, EMG and isokinetic dynamometry.
