Physiotherapists honoured by the Queen

CSP fellow Karen Barker, who is clinical director for trauma and orthopaedics at Oxford University Hospitals Foundation Trust and head of physiotherapy at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her achievements in physiotherapy research and implementation of research evidence in practice.

Also receiving an OBE was Susan Greenhalgh, a consultant physiotherapist at Bolton NHS Trust, whose honour was in recognition of her work identifying ‘red flags’ in the presentation of cauda equina syndrome.

Melrose Stewart, a physiotherapy lecturer and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy, was made a Member of the British Empire (MBE), for her substantial work for the BME community and for older people.

Jane Pyman, consultant physiotherapist, University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, also received an MBE for her services to physiotherapy and rehabilitation in paediatrics and to orthopaedic surgery. 

And David McDonald was made a  Member of the British Empire (MBE) for services to healthcare and for his work as the national lead for enhanced recovery across NHS Scotland.  He spent much of his career an orthopaedic physiotherapist and now combines a role with the Scottish government (Modernising Patient Pathway Programme) with being a senior research fellow at Glasgow Caledonian University (Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional Research Unit).
