A new set of principles for continuing professional development (CPD) have been developed for all staff delivering health and social care in the UK.
Over 20 organisations representing the support worker and registered workforce, including the CSP, were involved.
The principles highlight the importance of CPD for
• the delivery of high-quality, sustainable services to patients
• developing the workforce
• staff recruitment and retention
They consider the issues from
• the perspective of individuals’ responsibility to undertake CPD
• employers’ responsibility to support all staff to access and engage in CPD
• wider systems responsibilities (including among government departments and agencies, and professional and systems regulators) to promote CPD and equitable support for career-long learning and development
‘The messages conveyed in the principles are very timely in the context of the new NHS Long Term Plan in England,’ said CSP assistant director Sally Gosling.
‘The plan places a strong emphasis on CPD for achieving the changes required to meet population and patient needs in effective, affordable and accessible ways.’
The CSP will be reviewing how it makes best use of the principles to strengthen support for members.
