MP Sonia Kumar used her platform in Parliament this week to spotlight the crucial role of physiotherapists in tackling musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, stressing the urgent need for increased investment in this area across the NHS.
With a decade of experience as a physiotherapist, the Dudley MP is a passionate advocate for the profession. She called for the expansion of physiotherapists' roles at all stages of life, emphasizing the significant benefits they bring in diagnosing, managing, and preventing MSK issues.
‘Physiotherapists are not just treating conditions - they’re building a healthier, more active society,” she said.
From GP practices to A&E departments, MSK physiotherapists are vital in diagnosing, managing, and referring patients to the right care. Whether it's through fracture liaison services, pain management clinics, or even performing simple surgeries, we’re at the frontline
Kumar also pointed out the growing strain on the NHS due to long-term MSK conditions, highlighting that by 2035, two-thirds of the UK population will live with at least two long-term conditions, with over 20 million affected by arthritis and MSK disorders today. She warned that MSK conditions already cost the NHS £5 billion annually, taking up valuable GP appointments, hospital beds, and prescriptions.
‘We need a holistic approach to MSK care,’ she said. ‘It’s not just about health - it's about supporting economic participation and improving overall wellbeing.’
Andrew Gwynne, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Public Health and Prevention, responded by acknowledging the significant impact that MSK conditions have on individuals, their loved ones, and the broader NHS and economy.
He said:
MSK conditions are the leading cause of years lived with disability in England and, as of September, England has the longest community services waiting list in the country
'I will take away suggestions regarding physiotherapists and allied health professionals (AHPs), particularly focusing on the impact MSK conditions have on children and the importance of reaching hard-to-reach communities.’
Kumar’s recommendations for the future include:
Recognizing the critical role of physiotherapists and allied health professionals (AHPs) in healthcare
Introducing Community Assessment Days to catch MSK issues early
Expanding the rollout of FCP services in GP practices
Improving access to healthcare services, particularly in underserved areas
Promoting physical activity as a key to lifelong wellness
Launching a public awareness campaign on maintaining MSK health throughout life.
Funding for innovative MSK treatments
Meanwhile, the Government has announced a £3.5million funding boost to be shared by 17 NHS areas to trial innovative ways to treat MSK conditions. It is part of a drive to tackle economic activity and get people back into work.
Sara Hazzard, CSP assistant director of strategic communications, said: 'We are thankful to Sonia for using her platform to shine a spotlight on the critical roles of physiotherapists working across all areas of the NHS from acute to primary to community.
'Her calls to action underscore the importance of investing in the MSK workforce to reduce waiting times, lower healthcare costs, and enhance quality of life for millions.'
