We’re getting closer to Older People’s Day (1 October) when nearly 400 of you will be taking part in events to highlight the role of physiotherapy staff in caring for our elders.
This issue of Frontline looks at a number of innovative projects aimed at supporting older people in their own homes, rather than in hospital. As PhysioFindings highlights, care needs for people over 65 are set to grow exponentially in the coming decades. It’s something we should all be concerned about. After all, any of us might need care in the future.
Every day, many of you support older people in their own homes to recover after a stroke, like the community rehab team in Oxfordshire. And our cover feature looks at a forward-looking hospital-at-home initiative in Lanarkshire.
Some older people develop dementia and they may find it difficult to manage as they forget to eat properly or take vital medication. A training course run by a physio in Wales helps staff understand issues around dementia and the appropriate language to use.
So to mark Older People’s Day, why not tell people about what you are doing for our older population? Many members will be taking part in local events, using the CSP’s influencing presentations to promote the role of physio in preventing falls.
You can play your part by checking out our new falls prevention animation, (available to members and due to go public on 25 September).
Why not mark the day by forwarding the link to friends, relatives, your GP and a local councillor?
