Physios invited to take part in shoulder research work

Physiotherapists from around the UK are being given a ‘voice’ in a web-based research project.

The Cardiff University-led initiative will allow all physios who work with shoulder problems to contribute to developments in their field and shape everyday measurement tools.
Physiotherapy lecturer Mike Smith said the involvement of ‘a large tranche of the profession’ would ensure the work was ‘truly representative of clinical practice.’
The Cardiff Interactive Shoulder Movement Alliance was launched today. It is a collaboration between Cardiff University and clinicians from South East Wales.
It aims to establish a standardised clinical approach for describing and recording scapulothoracic position and movement patterns.
Mike Smith said: ‘There is no consistency currently. This can hinder the effective management of people with shoulder pain and impact on continuity of care.’
Through the CISMA website, physios and shoulder clinicians will be invited to give their opinions on the terminology they use, as well as view and comment on clinical videos.
Mr Smith said this should lead to a ‘well-informed’ measurement tool by the end of the year.
‘We want to give as many physios as possible the opportunity to participate. This gives clinical physios a voice and brings democracy to clinical research.’
