Applying

At the present time, we strongly recommend that you apply for student membership by completing a hardcopy application form. You may have been given this by your university's CSP student representative or by the CSP Students Officer when he has visited the university. If you do not have a form, please contact the CSP Enquiry Handling Unit either by email enquiries@csp.org.uk or phone 020 7306 6666.

Guidance on completing your application

  • Please note, we do not require you to supply evidence of enrolment on your physiotherapy programme, as is indicated on your form (we already have this from your institution)
  • If you want to pay in full for the duration of your programme, either attach a cheque (made payable to 'The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy'), or complete the direct debit mandate part of the application form. If you want to pay in annual instalments, complete the direct debit mandate part of the form. N.B. Cheques for payment by annual instalments cannot be accepted.
  • Please check below whether you need to send a confidential disclosure with your application.
Then, send your completed and signed form and cheque (if you are choosing to pay by this method) to:

Making a confidential disclosure

You need to make a confidential disclosure if any of the statements below apply to you (whether they occurred in the UK or elsewhere):
  1. You have any criminal convictions or police cautions (please note, under UK law, criminal convictions working in the health sector, with children or vulnerable groups, never become time-expired); if this applies to you, you will need to supply an up-to-date enhanced disclosure from the relevant disclosure authority (details of which are provided in the CSP guidance)
  2. You have been declared bankrupt
  3. You have ever been suspended from the register and/or the subject of fitness to practise proceedings by a professional or regulatory body.

For more information about why the CSP sets these requirements, please see the conditions page in this section of the site.

If you do need to make a confidential disclosure for any of the reasons outlined above, please refer to CSP guidance on the information you need to supply and the process through which your disclosure will go so that your application for student membership can be considered. For further information, please either download the PDF documents on the the conditions page or contact the CSP by email enquiries@csp.org.uk or phone 020 7306 6666.

Fees

CSP student membership costs £32 per year. The total amount you need to pay, depending on the length of your programme, is shown in the table below:

Programme length Total tariff
Two years £64
Three years £96
Four years £128

You can do the following:
  • either pay the full cost of student membership upfront for the whole of your programme - to do this, please send a cheque with your application form, made payable to 'The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy' or complete the direct debit mandate part of the form
  • or, pay by annual instalments - to do this, please complete the direct debit mandate part of the form.

If you are already a subscribing CSP assistant member and continue this subscription for the duration of your programme, fees for student membership are waived and you are eligible for student membership at no extra cost. However, you still need to apply for student membership in the usual way. A £20 joining fee is payable when you become a qualified member of the CSP. You then pay qualified subscription fees thereafter.

Notes

Please bear in mind the following points:
  • If you choose to defer applying for membership, you will still have to pay the full amount for the duration of your programme (it is therefore wise to take-up of membership from the earliest point and gain access to the support, services and resources it provides)
  • If you should have to repeat a year (and therefore require the benefits of CSP student membership for a longer time period), you will need to pay for membership for that additional year
  • If you are required, or choose, to withdraw from a physiotherapy programme and have paid upfront and in full for student membership, we will refund payment for the year(s) for which you do not require CSP student membership
  • If you are required, or choose, to interrupt your physiotherapy studies and have paid upfront and in full for student membership, we will arrange for prospective payment for membership benefits to be held over until you resume your physiotherapy studies
  • If you choose not to take up CSP student membership, you will be required to pay a higher joining fee to the CSP when you graduate and seek qualified membership (the fee will be £195, compared with £20).
Once admitted to student membership, you should inform the CSP of any matter(s) that relates to the list under Making a confidential disclosure that arise during your studies (as well as notifying your HEI).
