Effective practice

Whatever your occupational role - clinical physiotherapist, assistant, manager, researcher, educator or student - you need to use the best available evidence to inform your practice. This section of the site has a wide range of information designed to help you do this. In addition to dedicated research, clinical guidelines, outcome measures, physiotherapy standards and audit sections, we also feature the 'sharing effective physiotherapy practice' (SEPP) project.

Clinical guidelines

Clinical practice guidelines form part of the evidence base from which practitioners work. They are written on a clearly defined topic and, after a systematic search, use the best available evidence. See our selection of physiotherapy specific guidelines for more details. You can also find out more about current guideline developments by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN).

Outcome measures

What is an outcome measure and why should you use them to inform your clinical practice? Answer these and other questions in our dedicated outcome measures section. Search our online database of over 200 outcome measures. Most records have extensive reference fields for futher investigation.

Standards

All members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy should work to the core standards of physiotherapy practice. The revised version, updated in 2005, set the national standards against which individuals and services can compare their performance. See our standards section for further information including a PDF download.
